Find old text messages by keyword or date
Scrolling back two years in a conversation on a phone takes forever, and phone search often finds only recent or indexed messages. A backup on your computer can be searched all at once.

On the phone
- iPhone: pull down in Messages to search. Results include messages still on the device; there is no date filter.
- Android (Google Messages): tap search; you can filter by contact and type (images, links).
Search a backup on your computer
- Make or locate a backup: an iPhone backup folder (unencrypted) or an Android XML backup. Older backups may still contain messages you've since deleted from the phone.
- Open it in Threadlode and type a word, name or number – it searches across all conversations and jumps to the message.
- Export the conversation to PDF or Excel.
Search by date
Export to Excel/CSV (one row per message with date and time) and filter the date column – the fastest way to see everything from a specific day or month.
Read your backup now. Threadlode opens Android SMS Backup & Restore XML files, unencrypted iPhone backups (sms.db) and the Mac Messages folder (chat.db) in your browser, with photos and search, and exports PDF, Excel, CSV or an HTML archive. Nothing is uploaded. Reading and search are free; a $15 one-time license removes the export limit.
Questions and answers
Can I find messages deleted before the backup?
No. Only what was in the backup at the time it was made.
Mac with iCloud Messages?
Open ~/Library/Messages in Threadlode to search the Mac's copy, including recent messages in chat.db-wal.
